Alcoholism In Scotland: Including Some Highland and Island Occupational Connotations
Craig Dunain Hospital Inverness
Alcoholism in Scotland is discussed in general terms. It is noted that the available figures relate to in-patient admissions and that community incidence figures are a different and difficult matter. The fact that the in-patient rate for Scotland is 4 times as many alcoholics per head of population in Scotland. Similarly the Highland and Island in-patient rate of 3 times the Scottish average does not mean that there are 3 times as many alcoholics in the Highlands and Islands per head of population as is the rest of Scotland. Many variable factors enter into the question of hospital admission figures. This has long been known and noted but merits reiteration. Community incidence studies are far from easy.
