O.P. Edmonds

Physician-in-charge Manchester University Student Health Service

At an Institute of Science and Technology 6.5 per cent of Students attended the Medical Centre with psychological upset during one year. Inception rate was highest in the third term of the third year of exposure, but a substantial proportion occurred both before and after. The average number of attendances made by each student so affected was higher than that of other students, but the range was not dis-similar, with a small group accounting for a large porportion of the total consultaions made. It is estimated that one trained Connsellor is needed for psychological upsts amongst the 3000 students o this Unviersity Institute.Oversall the work performance of this group was adversely affected, aspecially among the requent attendaers and this emphasses the role of an Occupational Health Service in contributing to the success of its enterprise.
