Oil Cancer in the Savoy Alps and the Birmingham Region : A Comparison
Medical Services Division, Department of Employment
Cancer in the scrotum is a very rare disease. There is however a high incidence of this cancer, attributed to oil in the valley of the River Arve in the Savoy Alps in France and in the Birmingham region in the Midlands of England.A general comparison has been made in these two dissimilar areas of the possible factors involved:1. The size of population at risk2. Knowledge available on the true incidence3. The industrial processes4. The type of machines5. The oil and its use6. The actual exposure to the oil7. The presence of oil fume8. The materials machined9. The social and racial composition of the population at risk10. The general hygiene of the workplaces11. The wearing of protective clothing12. The extent of health education.A special comparison has also been made of the possible factors involved in the apparently increased incidence in one factory in the Birmingham region and the increased incidence among the artisans of the cottage industries in the valley of the Arve.
