The Needs of the Occupational Physician for Diagnostic Radiological Services*

Inquiry was made to physicians practising occupational medicine for information on their need for radiological investigations in the course of their work. Information was sought, by letter and questionnaire, from 82 physicians on the provision of X-ray apparatus within their own medical departments and their need for, and use of, consultant radiological opinion (Appendix 1).In all 74 provided information and many amplified their views in personal discussion. The replies from 49 medical officers working in industry have been studied in detail-Thirty had their own X-ray apparatus provided within their medical department; the consensus of opinion was that this facility was invaluable. Seventeen medical officers worked in industries employing a consultant radiologist part time, 18 sought the opinion of a consultant radiologist occasionally, 9 medical officers were or had been associated with a radiologist in a research project. The approximate total number of X-rays taken annually at the request of medical officers in industry was 149,954 for a population of 1,216,355 employed persons.
