The Early Detection of Bladder Carcinoma in Industrial Workers and the use of a Hydrostatic Pressure Technique in Treatment
Department of Urology, The Royal Infirmary Huddersfield, Yorkshire
The use of regular cytological examinations of the urine in workers who are thought to have been exposed to possible carcinogenic agents is recommended. Attention is drawn to the criteria of malignancy in interpreting the cytological abnormalities in the urine. Exposure to carcinogens can lead to instability of the bladder mucosa as a precursor to either papillomata or carcinoma, although the time interval in these changes may be many years. Cyclo-phosphamide may tend to delay this process developing. The use of a high pressure therapy technique in the treatment of histologically proven tumours of the bladder is described showing that this treatment can be used with good effect in Tl and T4 growths but not in T2 and T3 tumours.
