The Problem and Management of Alcoholism in Industry*

J. S. MADDEN, Consultant Psychiatrist

Addiction Unit Moston Hospital, Chester

The effects of alcoholism on industry are increasingly apparent, so a growing number of companies operate alcoholism programmes. Employers are well placed to direct alcoholic personnel to treatment with results that are frequently beneficial to firms. For effectiveness, an alcoholism policy in a company should be clearly understood and accepted, would include education on alcoholism and its detection, and propose therapeutic rather than disciplinary measures. Therapy for alcoholism involves, after initial detoxification at home or in hospital, long-term guidance obtainable from a wide range of professional and non-statutory sources.
