The Environmental Survey: Practical Guidance for New Entrants to Occupational Health and Safety
Senior Medical Officer, Directorate of Civilian Medical Services, Ministry of Defence (Procurement Executive)
The opportunities for formal training in hazard identification and evaluation available to new entrants and part-time workers in Occupational Health are comparatively few. The walk through environmental survey is one of the best methods of learning about this vital function. This article seeks to provide guidance to the newcomer on how to conduct one of these personal surveys. It places particular emphasis on careful preparation prior to the visit and on personal conduct and approach. Information is given on the points to look for and the hazard groupings.
