Toxicological Assessment of Potential Hazards from New Inorganic Fibres*

G. H. PIGOTT and J. ISHMAEL

ICI Central Toxicology Laboratory

An experimental programme to evaluate the potential hazard of inorganic fibres is described. Model systems (both in vitro and in vivo) which may be used to evaluate the probable effects of fibres are critically examined and the problems inherent in interpretation of results are discussed. The use of such systems both individually and in combination is illustrated by reference to results obtained from ICE experimental fibres.
