Schizophreniform Psychosis caused by Sniffing Toluene*
Prestwich Hospital
A detailed case report is given of a patient who developed an unusual delusional illness with symptoms resembling schizophrenia. The patient was exalted and thought that he was God. There had been a prodromal period of some days before the acute episode on the day of admission. Investigation showed that he had been deliberately sniffing toluene, which was used as an industrial solvent in his work in the rubber processing industry.
The case is described partly because the association between toluene and psychosis has been very rarely reported in the past, and is therefore of considerable interest to industrial medical practitioners, and partly because of the rarity of industrial poisoning presenting in the psychiatric hospital, which is of great importance for clinical psychiatrists.
