Investigating Heart Attacks at Work*

PETER J. BAXTER, Health and Safety Executive0

Employment Medical Advisory Service London

A checklist of descriptive features of heart attacks is presented which may be used in investigating cases suspected of being related to occupation. These features include: diagnostic criteria, activity at onset, time of day, day of week, week and month of year, place of attack, whether fatal or non-fatal and the length of time taken to return to work. In workplaces with a known or suspected hazard this information should be kept routinely in a heart attack register.
