Biochemical Changes Associated with Chloracne in Workers Exposed to Tetrachlorazobenzene and Tetrachlorazoxybenzene*

D.A. SCARISBRICK1,0 and J.V. MARTIN2

1 Health and Safety Executive, Employment Medical Advisory Service Sheffield
2 Consultant Chemical Pathologist, Chesterfield Royal Hospital

In 1976 and 1977 workers on two linked plants producing the herbicide Diuron and its precursor 3,4-dichloraniline (DCA) developed mild chloracne. One year later review of the results of serial liver function tests, together with lipid profiles in some of the workers, revealed a higher than expected incidence of abnormalities. A controlled biochemical investigation and a follow-up study were made of the work-force on the two plants. There were no significant abnormalities of liver function in the DCA/Diuron workers. However, there was a statistically significant increase in their mean tri-glyceride values which was greater in those who had chloracne. Mean cholesterol levels were also higher. As a result of a combined programme of improved occupational hygiene and personal health care the lipid values returned to normal.
