Poor Visual Acuity of Taxi Drivers as a Possible Cause of Motor Traffic Accidents in Bendel State, Nigeria*

WOLE ALAKIJA0

Department of Community Health, College of Medical Sciences, University of Benin Nigeria

Analysis of police case files in Bendel State, Nigeria, shows that road traffic accidents are most common among taxi drivers. In a survey of 180 taxi drivers in Benin City, Nigeria, the majority of the 31.7 per cent found to have poor visual acuity are between 27 and 38 years but the incidence is highei among those over 35 years. The level of education and number of years of professional driving have not been found to influence the development of poor visual acuity. Unmarried drivers tend to have poorer visual acuity compared with married, divorced or widowed drivers. Very few of those with poor visual acuity are aware of their defect. It is emphasized that correction of poor visual acuity is a way of reducing the incidence of road traffic accidents among taxi drivers.
