Disorientation in Army Helicopter Operations*

A brief summary of orientation error accidents during the period 1962–79 is made with particular relevance to aircrew experience and training, cockpit design and workload, and environmental and operational factors. The present situation regarding aircrew training in service aircraft and operations is reviewed.
The use of modern avionics in light helicopters is discussed and recommendations are made regarding the reduction of orientation error accidents in Army helicopter operations. In particular, the helicopter disorientation training sortie currently in use on the Army Pilots Course is described in detail.
