Some Issues in the Occupational Psychology of Back Injury

Raymond K. Field, David Q. Halse Rogers and Barbara L. Roberts

Division of Vocational Guidance Services, Department of Industrial Relations East Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

A brief examination of some of the issues to be considered in the vocational guidance of disabled persons is followed by consideration of the disabled individual characterized by low back pain referred to a vocational guidance agency for assessment and counselling.

The results of a survey of 64 unemployed back-injured adults, referred to the agency over a 15-month period, are reported.

Subjects were found to fall into four overlapping subgroups distinguishable in terms of re-employment prognosis with one subgroup considered quite difficult to retrain for open employment.

Although a general profile of the unemployed backinjured client is discernible, the relative significance of variables relevant to rehabilitation is not at present fully understood. The importance of psychological factors in rehabilitation is considered in need of more detailed investigation.
