Effects of Beclomethasone Exposure in Industry
Glaxo Operations UK Ltd
A clinical, laboratory and environmental survey was carried out on the effects of exposure of staff to small quantities of a potent corticosteroid (beclomethasone dipropionate) during the industrial processes concerned with its incorporation into aerosol form for therapeutic inhalation. Pharmacological problems such as a marked vasoconstriction withdrawal phenomenon and opportunistic mycosis were clinically manifest, but systemic involvement was lacking. The industrial remedies undertaken are described and assessed. A strong awareness of potentially hazardous topical and systemic effects is essential among all those involved, although the clinical safety of the drug is stressed.
