Respiratory Disablement: Problems and Opportunities*

Disablement on account of respiratory impairment is still relatively common despite the reductions in air pollution and improvements in treatment which have taken place over the past 20 years. This lecture describes the immediate respiratory causes of disablement and a method for its assessment, looks at problems of definition and prevalence and considers aspects of mechanisms, prevention and management, including industrial injuries benefit, with special reference to the coalmining industry.
