Group Occupational Health Services have developed slowly over the past thirty years. This paper describes how an occupational health service under the direction of a trained and experienced occupational health nurse was organized for a group of industries on an industrial estate in County Durham. The problems encountered during the setting up period are outlined, the major one being employers ignorance of the purpose of occupational health services. Reasons for the slow development of group services are suggested and ideas for their future development are discussed.
