The Employment Problems of People Disabled by Schizophrenia

MICHAEL FLOYD

Tavistock Institute of Human Relations

Over 150 people admitted to psychiatric hospitals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were followed up for a 12 month period. Only a small number of them were employed during the whole of this period. The extremely high rate of unemployment amongst the sample appeared to be primarily due to their failure to remain in jobs rather than their difficulty in finding them. They left jobs for the most part voluntarily, chiefly in response to excessive ‘stress’. They remained in jobs where the work was satisfying and possessed certain characteristics, such as feedback on work performance, identified as desirable by the large body of research on ‘normal’ people.
