Basalt Pneumoconiosis
The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Heliopolis, Cairo
The health of a working population at the basalt crushing units of Abu-Zaabal quarry was studied. The prevalence of respiratory symptoms was statistically significant among this group compared with the controls. Twenty-eight cases of basalt pneumoconiosis were diagnosed giving an overall rate of 26-9 per cent among exposed workers. Pulmonary function tests revealed the occurrence of significant airway obstruction at an earlier stage and to a greater extent than the restrictive pathology. A significant increment in RV values was found in all exposed workers and the RV/TLC was significantly elevated. The effect of smoking, presence of chronic bronchitis and duration of occupational exposure, together with the type of work performed on the pulmonary indices were studied.
