Occupational Medicine in International Industry

NIGEL W. ASHWORTH0

Formerly Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies London, UK

A brief description is given of the development of occupational medicine as a specialty in UK and USA and this is developed further to underline the needs of international companies. Mention is made of the increasing difficulties being experienced in the recruitment, training and development of physicians in international service, bearing in mind the increasing sophistication of training requirements and the need to comply with more exacting requirements for qualifications.

A superficial review is made of the various problems increasingly being encountered in maintaining an international medical function, with particular emphasis on general medical services and the need to keep abreast of developments in preventive health/occupational, general medical and exotic disease.
