Occupational Health and Safety in the National Health Service: The Present and The Future
Consultant Occupational Physician, North Western Regional Health Authority Manchester
Senior Registrar in Occupational Medicine, North Western Regional Health Authority Manchester
In this paper we review the type and extent of occupational health services provided by the National Health Service for its own and Local Authority employees. We also enquired into the extent of occupational hygiene services and safety officers in the National Health Service both in the North Western Region and in the rest of the country. We consider ways of improving National Health Service Occupational Health Units including the provision of specialist occupational physicians to each District.
Our conclusions are that future services should be consultant led. Based on our calculations for the North Western Region, this need not cost more than the present arrangements. An occupational hygiene service should be planned to meet the needs of National Health Service employees.
