Industrial Causation of ‘Zig Zag’ Deformity of Thumbs

A.E. WILSON and J. STOTHARD

British Steel Corporation Teesside Division and Middlesbrough General Hospital

We present a case report on a man who presented with bilateral zig zae deformities of his thumbs with hyperextension of the inter-phalangeal joints and flexion of the metacarpo-phalangeal joints. This was worse on the left hand which was his dominant side. This seemed to be caused by his occupation and this has not been previously reported. The patient has been followed up for 3 years and has developed no symptoms or signs of rheumatoid disease.
