The Recruitment to the Civil Service of People with Epilepsy

MICHAEL ESPIR1, ADRIAN SEMMENCE, Civil Service Medical Adviser and MICHAEL FLOYD, Director2,

1 Principal Medical Officer, Civil Service Occupational Health Service
2 Rehabilitation Resource Centre, Department of Systems Sciences, The City University

The Manpower Services Commission's recent publication A Code of Good Practice on the Employment of Disabled People (1984) stresses the importance of employers not discouraging disabled people from applying for jobs as a result of inappropriate and inadequate recruitment procedures. But, it might be asked, just what constitutes good practice in this area? The question can also be posed in another way. Disabled people are made to feel keenly aware of their obligation to disclose their condition to prospective employers. Should there not be a corresponding obligation on employers to treat this information in a sensitive and informed way?In an attempt to answer these questions we describe in this paper the Civil Service's policy regarding the recruitment of people with epilepsy.
