How Should the Health of Communities near Nuclear Installations be Monitored?

J.R. ENNIS

National Radiological Protection Board Didcot, Oxfordshire

There has recently been public concern about supposed excesses of childhood malignancies in the vicinity of nuclear installations, which has led in turn to debate about the collection and analysis of the medical statistics. This paper reviews the data which would be relevant in monitoring the carcinogenic effects, if any, of discharges from nuclear installations, and describes some research projects which are underway in England and Wales. There is a discussion of some of the issues associated with (he use of geographically ordered morbidity and mortality data for cpidemiological monitoring. The nature of the National Radiological Protection Board's interest in this area is defined.
