Occupational Health Services in 151 Health Districts in England and Wales in 1985

A. N. KAZEM

Occupational Health Department, Scunthorpe Health Authority, Scunthorpe General Hospital

To ascertain the current provision of Occupational Health Services (OHS) in the National Health Service in England and Wales, the degree to which they are currently integrated with services to Local Authorities, and the basis on which any charges are levied, a four page questionnaire was sent to 202 Health Districts. By January 1986, a total of 151 completed questionnaires had been received. After analysis of the results it is noted that the level of provision varies widely and in some districts is rudimentary, but there has been a notable increase in the number of doctors with specialist qualification in Occupational Medicine working for NHS/OHS. It is also noted that there is insufficient clerical support in some districts. In 60 per cent of 109 districts in England and Wales where local authorities have not set up their own independent OHS, services to local government are still provided by the community health doctors.
