Solutions A and B: Cyanide Antidote or Folklore Myth?

JESSIE M. CALLAGHAN and DAVID M. HALTON

Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety has received many requests for information on the origin, theoretical basis and efficacy of an oral antidote for cyanide poisoning. The antidote is known as solutions A and B. It is recommended in the literature of several chemical companies and is mentioned in several articles on first-aid treatment for oral cyanide poisoning. However, our research on this antidote suggests that it has been established more by tradition than by science.

Requests for reprints should be addressed to: Dr D. M. Halton, Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 250 Main Street East, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada L8N 1H6
