I must apologise for not having picked up reference to Robertson's studies in the 1950s. We noted in our paper that the Capper Pass smelter processed a wide variety of residues from other smelters in addition to ore concentrates. Consequently, I suspect that exposures to workers from secondary materials in these residues would have been much more significant than was the case in the Bootle smelter which Robertson studied; this will probably explain any differences in the mortality experience at the two smelters. We are shortly to submit a further manuscript which examines lung cancer mortality in relation to our estimates of exposures to lead, arsenic, cadmium and natural series radionuclides at Capper Pass.
