Surveys of death certificates of mercury-exposed and non-exposed factory populations were carried out for the periods 19451960 and 19721979. In the 19451960 survey, an excess of entries of genitourinary tract disease was found in the death certificates of mercury-exposed employees and pensioners which was also reflected, although the numbers were small, in an excess of deaths from genitourinary disease as an underlying cause. In the survey period 19721979 the number of entries of genitourinary tract disease was even smaller. Although there was still an excess in the mercury-exposed population, the excess was not evident as an underlying cause. In addition, no entry of genitourinary disease was found on the death certificates available of any employee or pensioner exposed to mercury after 1946.
